On Mastodon v4.3 many core files have been changed. Previous procedures for modifying character limit and max poll options will no longer work.
Take a look at this blog posts for more details: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2024/10/09/2024-modifying-limits-in-mastodon-4-3/

⚠️ Mastodon admins!
It's really important that you leave the "Remote content retention period" blank in your server settings. (This is also known as "content cache retention period" on older versions of Mastodon.)
If you put any values in there, it will start to permanently break threads on your server with no way of ever getting them back. This feature is NOT a cache, there is no way of restoring this data after it is deleted.

How do you retain custom changes to Mastodon during upgrade? I'm getting a lots of merge conflicts and I'm tired.

Hey, Instance admins and mods, or general users with an opinion on it out there, out of curiosity, do you allow blatant burner/temporary email addresses when people sign up or submit a join request?
I'm down with boosts for reach (hopefully my instance won't be! )
A nice tutorial on increasing your instance character limit in Mastodon v4.3. (The process is different from 4.2).

Can anyone help translating and interpreting a potentially transphobic Chinese post for moderation?
For those who came after February 2024 after the first SPAM attack, which was a lot bigger due to the Fediverse having more abandoned servers with open registrations, the same hacker group impersonated a Discord bot maker, while spamming users from instances that has open registrations.
This appears to be the same case with another Discord bot maker, midokuri. We know it’s the same team as they were spamming a wiki article that had 荒らし (literally means troll in Japanese), which mentioned the same troll group from the last spam attack.
Thankfully, it wasn’t as wide spread due to a change to Mastodon that automatically enables approvals if there is no active admin or mod for a period of time along with other tools like word filters that limited the impact. The SPAM only really come from abandoned Misskey servers and out of date and abandoned open registration Mastodon servers. According to IFTAS, the SPAM accounts only originated from about 87 servers
It seems that the spam attacks has officially stopped. Apparently the same Troll group probably wanted something out a discord bot developer. In short, it is the same thing like last time.
The attack lasted a little under 48 hours.
A blog post explaining what happen will be posted sometime this weekend

Now that I run upcoming version of @gotosocial time to try out much anticipated interaction policies: posts that are public or unlisted on my profile will now require approval when reply is written by someone who doesn't follow me or who I am not following
Since I moderate followers, this setting makes my experience next level - followers can interact with no limitations, so as good folks I follow myself
While commercial social netwoks keeps enshittification going full-scale, Fediverse just keeps getting better and better

Folks, please do continue to report the spam if you're getting it (I know most users aren't). It's incredibly helpful for the admin team so we can put limits on servers who are still allowing open signups and adding to the load.
