I held a 24 hour local poll asking indiepocalypse.social members how we wanted to handle instances like mastodon.social, which have open signups and can easily become vectors for spam and abuse.

There are 35 minutes left but with a split of 33%/67%, I'm calling it. indiepocalypse.social members would rather limit open signup instances, knowing it can limit discovery.

Effective immediately I have limited mastodon.social, mastodon.online and mastodon.world. In the future I will be checking other large Fediverse instances via the API and limiting them as necessary.

Thanks all!

Some interesting insights from the 2024 @iftas Fediverse Trust & Safety Needs Assessment Report.

- most communities operate on donations
- very few moderators receiving compensation
- roughly 1 moderator for every 1,200 active accounts
- only 16% of communities have 24–hour moderator coverage
- nearly 1/2 of moderator teams lack formal guidance
- 1 in 5 moderators report experiencing trauma or burnout this year

Very nice article about Sharkey by @elena@calckey.world : https://blog.elenarossini.com/sharkey-a-fediverse-project-that-is-beautiful-inside-out/

Next to
https://sharkey.world I also run https://calckey.world, which is the server she chose for testing Sharkey.

For those wondering about the name of that instance: when I installed it, I used the Calckey fork of Misskey. After a while, that software was re-branded to Firefish (that's the danger with using the software name as domain name ... but it is also appealing to users, for example mastodon.world and lemmy.world have attracted many users)

Meanwhile I found another Misskey fork called Sharkey, so I installed that at sharkey.world

And then Firefish stopped being developed, and Sharkey is very close to Firefish, and there's even a document on how to migrate from Firefish to Sharkey, so I did just that.

Resulting in me running 2 Sharkey instances.

Anyone knows if Mastodon has a build-in feature to block newly registered domains? :neocat_think:

Reminder that nsfw.social has a zero tolerance policy for CSAM/ CSEM. If we encounter CSAM in your account, or if we receive a report of CSAM in your account, we have no choice but to take swift and decisive action.

Do not upload any CSAM. Full stop.

If you think the subject might be underage, err on the side of caution and don't post it.

Here's what happens when one of your uploads matches known or suspected CSAM:

1. The URL to your image is automatically blocked.
2. A report is automatically generated and sent to the NCMEC.
3. We are notified.
4. We then must take steps to preserve the evidence attached to the image/ file that was posted. This includes preserving all metadata and logs associated with the file.
5. We will delete your upload.
6. We will suspend your account.

There is no appeal. There are no "3 strikes". There is one (1) strike. If we receive a report on your account, that's it.

There's no debate.

This is not censorship.

This is the law.

One for #FediAdmin,
If I wanted to nuke my instance and then set up a fresh one on the same domain, how much time should I leave to allow between nuke and restart?

Looking into ways we might better serve multiple #languages (English, Canadian French, American Spanish), wondering if anyone has suggestions for how to make the About and Policy pages multi-lingual in a way that looks elegant... Perhaps we could add some light JavaScript to them to hide and show different language sections? Is that a thing that works?

I have finally finished the first stage of the indiepocalypse.social blocklist review.

Some of you might know that 2 years ago when I started this instance, I imported blocklists from other instances and imported them with no review and without adding comments. Shortly after I also joined a Fedi admin Discord chat that helped feed into the Oliphant blocklist and set up to automatically import new additions to that list.

There was a technical issue with it, where retractions could not be automated and list item comments were not carried over. So for the time I was a participant, the blocklist grew and didn't shrink unless I manually went in.

There's a lot more to this particular story that I don't want to rehash but suffice to say after the Oliphant blocklist cabal fell apart I stopped importing blocklist items automatically and started making my own decisions. But with my real life I had difficulty finding the time to review everything I'd imported over the course of about a year.

Last night I finally sat down to review the list. We had roughly 32 pages (with 40 entries each) on our blocklist, and overwhelmingly they weren't commented in any way. While I had "The Game Awards" on as background noise I manually went through and deleted any uncommented items one-by-one. By the end we were down to 8 pages. That's how many I removed.

Some of the items I still have are just, "blocked by tenforward" or "blocked by mastodon.art" and I still need to manually review those and add my own comments/findings. But I wanted to let folks know where we stand as of today.

I made a lot of rookie admin mistakes 2 years ago that reverberate through to today. I don't want to provide excuses - just own up to them and provide transparency.

Thanks everyone.
