War jahrelang zufrieden bei Contabo. War halt billig, aber Leistung immer okay.
Offenbar wurden die vor zwei Jahren von einem Investor gekauft and it shows.
Server werden überbelegt mit VPS Instanzen, mein Server Upgrade wird seit Tagen nicht bearbeitet, Object Storage ist unbenutzbar. Also muss ich die gesamte Infrastruktur umziehen 😐
Was sind eure (konkreten) Empfehlungen? Kleine Instanz, dazu Nextcloud und ein paar kleinere Anwendungen.

- what are your system specs?
- what software are you hosting?
- how many users are there? how much activity is there?
- how does it run? how many resources does it use up (federation counted)?

I was trying to log into a #Mastodon client and the two factor authentication kept failing. SRE inside posited that it was probably a time issue since I logged in previously just fine.
Checked on the server and it was three minutes slow. The images at my hosting service really are bare minimum without ntp & ntpdate installed by default. Installed those and I am fine now.
Saturday fun.

We've upgraded the instance to Mastodon glitch-soc 4.3.2.
Everything appears to be running as expected, however if we do notice and regression (particularly around post lengths) we will reapply our changes which will take a few minutes.

We're a fairly new instance and have our books open to take on new members!
**The Basics**
We're a gaming-oriented server running the glitch-soc variant of Mastodon, so you get the Mastodon+ experience - everything you love about Mastodon but with lots of QoL tweaks, such as longer posts (up to 2048 characters!), rich text formatting brought to you by markdown, as well as lots of tweaks to make your experience in the fediverse a little nicer.
**The Rules**
We wish to run a friendly, kind and inclusive server, and do not have any tolerance for discrimination or bigotry of any kind, including but not limited to racism, ableism, homophobia and transphobia. It can be hard enough for people to be their true selves offline, let's not make it harder online too.
We also have no tolerance for the promotion or nazi, alt-right and ultra-conservative ideologies.
In the pursuit of accessibility, we ask users to add alt-text to their images for the advantage of those using screen readers to interact with us. However, we also do not tolerate abuse toward users who might forget to do so or aren't used to doing it yet.
**Legal Status**
All of our infrastructure and user data is held in Australia. We initially did hold some backup data in the USA for cost reasons, however in the wake of the US election result, and with the extreme risk those in vulnerable groups face, we made the decision to migrate this data back to Australia.

Conflicting feelings about how and where to federate
As a #Friendica small instance administrator, I am quite conflicted on who or what to follow, because everyone I follow will show up in the global timeline for all users forever.
1) I want to foster a Friendica-first global timeline so that our local users actually have a chance to use all of Friendica's features and so that Mastodon culture (short posts and threads due to character limits, title-less posts) does not completely overtake the local community.
2) I still want to interact with people and topics I am interested in, the vast majority of which happen to be on #Mastodon or other #microblogging software.
Everyone is on Mastodon or its microblogging derivatives. Even right now, after consciously following Friendica profiles first, practically my entire home page is Mastodon users. Almost all interactions I have are with microblogging accounts.
I don't want to have to avoid following interesting people just to avoid poisoning the global timeline with Mastodon accounts because they end up showing up for everyone in global.

Good news! We are now implementing the @iftas CARIAD 66% block list via IFTAS' FediCheck service.
This blocklist combines:
- The IFTAS *Do Not Interact* list, a list of instances that IFTAS highly recommends not to federate with
- A curated list of further domains that a selection high volume instances have defederated from.
There are 80%, 66% and 51% consensus levels available for the curated list. At this point we are syncing with the 66% consensus level.
At the moment we believe 66% is probably the right starting point, though if there's demonstratable value in reducing to 51% we'd consider doing so.
While the FediCheck service will simplify automated blocking of widely recognised offenders, it does not replace our own autonomous blocks based on what we observe and what is reported to us.
I believe the FediCheck service also allows our instance to automatically temporarily limit instances where we're seeing a spam wave or similar, but I need to look into it.
