#Threads is an absolute cesspit. Perhaps because #Meta is paying people for posting engaging content, it has recently lurched towards "human stories" posts, and I'm impressed by the consistency with which folks are able to write these in an engaging way but all the same some are really not content I want to see. And there's no way to choose not to see it.

There is no option in #Instagram now to stop it suggesting your profile in the app to other users who know your e-mail address or phone number.

There used to be an option to disable suggestion. #Meta removed it and replaced the section of the options where it used to be with a link to Meta Accounts Center (which no longer includes the option). You can disable suggestion on the web interface but that makes no difference to what happens in the app for you or others.

How is this legal?

Want to know how to stop your #Instagram app from suggesting your account to other people who happen to have your personal details (for reasons such as work etc.)?

Here's how 👇 If you search all you find in the official help is the option to disable suggestion on the desktop site, which doesn't seem to be linked to what happens in the app (i.e. you can disable your account being suggested on a PC but it will still be suggested in the app).

@starrwulfe You might not have realised it yet, but this is how the #Fediverse works. It's federated. So you choose an instance that corresponds with how you think an instance should be run (as best you can, as there may never be a 100% fit). Then if the situation changes, you move to another instance that is a closer match. That's why there's functionality to support movement. People voting with their feet keeps the whole thing healthy. That's not just about #Meta. #fediPact @khurtwilliams

@khurtwilliams Yes, please do avoid these instances — your good self, and everyone who sees this the same way. It would be excellent if you would all avoid these instances ☺️ #fediPact

The reaction by some Mastodon instance admins in joining a ANTI-META FEDI PACT to block Meta's Threads joining the Fediverse is hypocritical. They are essentially acting as gatekeepers to prevent alleged possible gatekeeping. Here's a list of instance admins/mods who have agreed to block Threads:https://fedipact.online/

Avoid these instances. Quoting John Gruber on BlueSky:

Masto zealots: We’re open, federate with us!
Instagram: Great, we’re building a new thing to join you.
Masto zealtots: Not that kind of open!

I have a passion and obsession using #OrgMode. Being able to structure & capture the vagaries of life, my thoughts & information in portable #PlainText (with layered functionality bestowed via orgmode) excites & empowers me.

I've been exploring #emacs & #OrgMode for about 6 years now & I'm here for a like-minded community on the #fediverse (part of the #fedipact - keen on #privacy & #security) where I can join & discuss #emacs, #linux, #foss, #fediverse & other interests (#music and #VideoGaming).

@bytor I did not sign the #fedipact because I am on my own family & friends instance and I want the choice to use my fediverse identity to talk to threads.

However I recognize that very large instances harm the distributed nature of the fediverse. It becomes centralized for all practical purposes.

Just off the top of my head, no instance / admin should control the experience of more than 1% of people of fediverse.

@bytor (That's even setting aside the whole issue of harm #Meta could and probably will do to the #Fediverse as an obstacle to its commercial doninance — I think if you consider that as well, the overall effect would be negative for growth, long term. Meta is promising growth right now. There are reasons they're going that. These guys do not engage in charity.) #fedipact
